Family Dentist Jackson Heights

Here at the Jackson Heights family dentist practice of The Gentle Dentist — Dr. Amit Sood — we see mouths that are everything from perfectly healthy to perfectly unhealthy. While we’d much prefer to see teeth and gums that are looking strong, we understand that the fates sometimes have other plans. Normally, we’re able to address problems fairly easily: a little drilling and filling here, a little bit of planing and scaling there, and you’re good to go. Sometimes, however, teeth are so damaged that we need to perform a root canal to avoid having to extract the affected tooth entirely.

There are a number of reasons why you might end up needing to undergo a root canal here at the practice of The Gentle Dentist — Dr. Amit Sood. Two of the more common causes are out-of-control tooth decay (a.k.a. cavities) and severe dental trauma, which both can severely undermine a tooth’s structural integrity, leaving the pulp subject to infection. So, what should you expect when our Jackson Heights family dentist tells you that you need to get a root canal? We’re glad you asked! Basically, there are three steps. First, your dentist will numb you up and drill an “access hole” in the top of the tooth undergoing the treatment. Second, a special set of files will be used to clean out the insides of the damaged tooth. (Because tooth roots can be pretty complicated things, this may take a little while.) Finally, the hollow space left inside the tooth after the filing will be filled up with a specially-formulated compound. Though we’ll have you come in for a follow-up appointment, just to make sure everything’s healing properly, this is usually the end of the story.

Do you have an injured or decayed tooth that’s bothering you? Are you simply overdue for your six-month comprehensive dental exam?
